I am currently preparing to leave for the MBP project in Madagascar, I am going to be volunteering for the Greater Bamboo Lemur (Prolemur simus) project and I can’t wait! Since I found out I was coming to Madagascar about 2 months ago I have been reading about the species as well as the threats to their survival. I was interested to read that it’s been suggested they do well in areas with a small amount of disturbance as it allows light into the area which helps bamboo to grow, thus supporting the Greater Bamboo Lemur population, this seems slightly counter intuitive, so I’m looking forward to learning more about their complex habitat use. I am impatiently awaiting my first glimpse of a wild lemur!
The past two months have been a blur of working as much as possible to save for the trip, writing list after list of the things I need to buy, pack and find in the loft (or scavenge from friends and family), as well as read around the subject as much as possible, have a last catch up with friends and family and finish the dress I decided to make just before being accepted! But finally I have just under a week to go, and after a long day shopping yesterday (and a slightly faint moment at the chemist when they told me the price of the malaria tablets), I am starting to feel a bit more organized. Now, I just have to work out how everything I bought is going to fit into my suitcase… and I’ll be off!
