Red List of Threatened Lemurs

IUCN New Categorization of Lemurs

Slide4 Slide5

In July, 2012, the International Union for Conservation of Nature met in Madagascar to discuss the plight of lemurs, and they declared that

73% of all lemur species are listed as endangered or critically endangered, making lemurs the most threatened group of mammals in the the world.

Our own director, Dr. Edward Louis Jr., played a significant role in this reclassification process. Having worked in the country since 1998, we have collected photos and biological samples of almost all the 112 lemur species. We’re sharing our photos here with the updated species status from the meeting. This data emphasizes the importance of effective conservation and scientific research in Madagascar. Please note that we are always trying to keep updated on the ICUN status so check back for changes!
